Guido Mul
Professor in Photo- and Electrocatalysis at University of Twente
Guido is excited and inspired by the capabilities of Infrared and Raman spectroscopy to reveal the mechanism and fundamentals of chemical transformations on the surfaces of heterogeneous catalysts, including photo- and electrocatalysts. His objective is to determine which factors control a catalytic conversion, disentangling material properties & kinetics from mass transfer limitations, and to define the optimal catalyst composition & porosity, and reactor configuration for photo- and electrocatalytic conversion. Recent highlights include the development of a novel porous tubular electrode architecture, the socalled Hollow Fibre Electrode, which operates in gas flow through configurations, and shows high conversion rates in a variety of electrochemical reactions. In photocatalysis, his group discovered the function of specific facets in photocatalysis, for BiVO4 photocatalysts in energy applications, and SrTiO3 photocatalysts in environmental applications.
Besides being curiosity driven, Guido also focuses on applied research. He is now the technical manager of Hypro, a consortium within Groenvermogen aimed at the cost reduction of the production of Hydrogen, and he coordinates SLDBatt, a consortium within the Growth Fund “Material Independence & Circular Batteries”, focusing on technologies for long duration electricity storage.
