Sustainable and Smart: Biobased Monomers for photodegradable polymers

In response to the growing demand for more sustainable alternatives to conventional petroleum-based plastics, considerable efforts have been devoted to the development of monomers and polymers derived from renewable feedstocks. Among them, lignocellulosic biomass represents one of the most abundant and widely available sources of non-food carbon and therefore offers significant potential for the sustainable production of value-added chemicals without directly competing with food production.

In this talk I will present our most recent results on the valorization of lignin- and hemicellulose-derived building blocks for the synthesis of radically polymerizable vinyl monomers. In addition to exploring lignin-based building blocks to produce styrene-like biobased polymers, we studied in particular the (co)polymerization of biobased photo-reactive vinyl ketones, which should lead to photo-degradable polymer systems.
